One year in

Immy reflects on her first year at Rambutan and how much she’s learnt.

I’ve been part of Rambutan for a year, and I absolutely love it! The environment that’s been created is perfect. Everyone looks out for each other, on both personal and work-related topics. Whenever I need it, everyone’s there to lend a hand or chat through my struggles, which has helped immensely as I’ve grown used to the working world. This is my first year in a full-time job following university, so I’m taking every opportunity that I can to gain more knowledge.

My favourite part of working at Rambutan is all the client projects I’ve been involved with. I’ve learnt so much whilst being involved in some of the bigger client projects, where I’ve completed lots of different and innovative design pieces. During all my development I’ve had fun! I’ve really enjoyed meeting all the bunch over the last year, especially at our Summer Team Day. Playing games and getting to know everyone on a more personal level was awesome.

I’ve realised that I have a voice to share my opinions and that I need an open mind. Instead of being set in one way, I’ve discovered it’s important to listen to others’ ideas as well. Brainstorming with members of the bunch means I’m able to run ideas past them, as well as take on different perspectives and try things I hadn’t considered.

Another learning over the last year is how to have a great work-life balance. Before Rambutan, I was a freelance designer with long, random hours, where there was little separation between work and home life. I now love having more of a schedule. I come into the office on a Monday and know what I need to complete and when.

A key development for me over the last year has been feedback. I’ve become more used to giving members of the bunch feedback, as well as accepting it myself. It’s amazing to find areas where I can improve, not just with my design, but with my interactions with others. This has really helped me to develop and improve within the work setting. My favourite way to give and receive feedback is through one-to-one honest, open conversations.

I’m looking forward to my future at Rambutan and continuing to develop my designs and expand them out into animation!
