Emma and Ellie reflect on celebrating success and the importance of micro-moments.
Recently we were surprised by our bunch colleagues with a remix of ‘Happy Birthday’ to celebrate our one-year work anniversary at Rambutan, alongside a cupcake or two! This gesture reminded us of a talk we attended at a recent CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) exhibition, all about milestones.
Celebrating successes, no matter their size was the theme that stood out to us both in this talk. Big successes are easily recognised and naturally obvious – for example, receiving an award at a ceremony. These often take the limelight, drawing attention away from the blood, sweat and tears involved in reaching them. It’s the small steps you take on the journey that result in such big success and recognition, so why don’t we focus on them more?
The micro-moments can be just as, if not more, important than the end result. These moments can often be immensely personal and memorable. We find great value in recognising these achievements. These may be in the form of feedback from a colleague, positive affirmations, or even from time-to-time treating yourself, however big or small the success may seem. For us, this can be as simple as a high five from another bunch member, a boss chat over lunch, or a spot of retail therapy. Whilst it was great to celebrate our one-year anniversary, it’s the micro-moments on our journey to where we are today that we’re the proudest of.
We think it’s great to share these successes with your family, friends and colleagues. If you’re proud of something you’ve done, why not share it? Others will relish the opportunity to celebrate your achievement with you. Who doesn’t love to hear about someone else’s successes and celebrate them? It’s important to remember that everyone’s micro-moments and stepping stones on their journey will be different. What may be a micro-moment for someone else may be the day-to-day for you (and vice-versa), but that doesn’t make any moments any less important.
What micro-moments could you celebrate and share?
