There’s lots of information out there about leading virtually during these unusual times, and rightly so. We all need some additional support and guidance at these times, but Craig has been wondering how else you could continue your development as a leader or manager.
Right now, I’m noticing leaders and managers are starting to consider how they could develop themselves and their people for our amazing future. Yes, amazing future… this blip will pass, and we’ll be stronger and better leaders because of it.
It’s natural that at the moment, development for leaders has not been at the front of people’s minds. But, as we all become more comfortable leading during these times, our capacity to find time to do more increases. Developing leaders and managers now, to be fit for the future and support their people, even more, could be an option. In fact, during these uncertain times, it could be viewed as a critical action.
It’s also worth noting that if you have leaders and managers who are currently furloughed, personal development could be a superb thing for them to focus on.
So, what could you be doing?
There are so many resources out there to help you, I thought I’d offer you a few options to consider:
There are lots of great offers for people to learn a new skill or technique. If a group of people learn something new together, a virtual meeting with them all afterwards would be a fantastic way to discuss learning, share experiences and translate the theory to everyday life.
There are some wonderful and inspiring TED talks. One of my favourites is a TED Talk by Simon Sinek about how good leaders work hard to make their people feel safe. If you run a learning session using Zoom (or an equivalent online video conferencing tool) and screen share, everyone can watch the TED Talk together and then discuss it afterwards.
Help leaders by offering virtual coaching sessions. These work brilliantly and allow a totally individual and empowering approach to learning.
Identify potential development needs and run a series of short virtual workshop sessions. These can be highly engaging, interactive and totally transferable to both the ‘here and now’ and the ‘amazing future’.
If you want to know how to make any of these ideas happen, Craig is happy to chat with you over a virtual coffee.
What are your ideas that will help others develop right now?
