As spring is now with us I’m inspired to start with my yearly (ok, a couple of weeks’ worth) exercise regime to get that summer body on the go! And what better way than a few brisk walks to blow the cobwebs away?
Friday 7 April saw ‘Walk to Work Day’, so for those that like to keep up with the latest trends, here’s a really healthy one that may help you to get the right start to your day.
A while ago my place of work was literally across the road and round the corner from where I lived. “Great!” I hear you cry. “How convenient!” And you’re right. I could nip home to get my washing in if it started to rain. I could pop in and grab something extra for lunch if I was hungry. And I was home and in my slippers at the end of the day within seconds!
The detriment of this, though, was that it didn’t give me any ‘thinking’ or ‘me’ time before I started my working day. I was out of the home/washing up/sandwich-making morning routine to sitting down and answering the phone practically straight away, with no time to take in the fresh air, stroll and see the birds, or sort out the coming day in my head; make plans; consider what shopping I needed to get for dinner later and so on.
How do you start your working day? From a business point of view, a ‘breather’ in the morning may help you to organise your working day in your head, and prepare for meetings, challenges, new ideas, or even just perk you up to get you through the humdrum of the workplace!
Those are the psychological benefits, but of course don’t forget the physical benefits too! Do you get fed up of sitting at a desk facing a PC all day? For those who aren’t lucky enough to be spending their time working outside in the elements, a spot of cardio exercise before the (sometimes) stuffiness of an office environment can only be a good thing! And speaking of the environment…what about the benefits to that as well? Leave the car at home and lower your carbon footprint…if only now and again!
Go on, give it a try! Yes, it may add a few extra minutes to your day, but those extra minutes may turn out to be your best of the day!
