Back in time for David as he gets a humorous tip on the subject of time itself.
Thanks to Karen Fuller, HR Director at RATP Dev London, for this trip down my timeline! Years ago, when I worked in retail operations for Sainsbury’s, I got a valuable lesson in time management. On a course I attended at their training centre in London, I was taught that ‘some people never seem to have time to do anything right but always find time to do everything twice’. We were encouraged as managers to do the former. If we did things right first time, and got our teams to do the same, we would save time and have more of it to do more things right first time.
This lesson has probably lived with me subconsciously for 25 years but it came flooding back into my conscious mind last week when I saw this sign in Karen’s office (that’s her hand in the picture!). It’s a humorous version of what I learned back at Sainsbury’s all those years ago but it still seems just as relevant today.
Lots of the brilliant managers at the companies we work with could do with ‘a few more hours in the day’ and I wonder how much time they would save with an old-fashioned dose of ‘right first time’. I would love to hear your thoughts (if you have a spare minute!).
